Leap was established in 1987 as a project of the Leaveners
(Quaker Community Arts Charity). It soon became apparent that
the work was meeting real needs, as the project attracted regional,
national and international recognition. In 1992 the Department
for Education and Employment (Youth Service Unit) provided funds
to launch Leap as the only conflict resolution centre for the
British Youth Service.
In 1999 the Trustees recognised that demand for all of Leap’s
work was increasing year by year. In order to meet these new
and growing needs, Leap Confronting Conflict was launched as
an independent registered charity and national voluntary youth
organisation (NVYO) registered with the Department for Education
and Skills.
The organisation has an outstanding, small core staff of full-time
and part-time workers. A regular pool of expert professional
trainers run the adult courses and help with some of the young
peoples’ training.
Leap’s projects have twice been short-listed for Philip
Lawrence Awards (in 2000 and 2002) and reached the finals of the
Whitbread Young Partners Awards in 2001. The organisation
received Investors in People status in December 2000 and in December 2003 .
